Île de France is a medium to large breed of sheep, bred in France, hornless, with a typical white fleece and light skin. In the 1990s it was exported to Canada and is currently bred in many countries including the USA, South Africa and Australia. It comes from a cross between the Rambouillet (which comes from a Merino ancestor) and the Leicester, a sheep with curly long fine wool.
Wool properties
The wool of this breed belongs to the fine to medium-fine types. The diameter of the fiber ranges from 23-30 microns, which corresponds to classes 50s-60s. The distance it has moved away from the fineness of its Merino ancestor, the more it has gained in resistance, while retaining a lot of elasticity and fluffiness.
The length of the fiber ranges from 7 to 9 cm, which is suitable for spinning by beginners and advanced. The wool has a regular curl (curvature) and well-defined strands that are easily separated. It combs well on a comber, crampons, and longer fibers also on combs.
Ille de France wool is whiter than many other wools (although the woolly creaminess remains), one of the finest we can find in Slovakia, beautifully elastic and fluffy. It will be great for combing, mixing, knitting, spinning and felting!
